“Go down 19” · “Go down 92”

Bag of Bones

The paired refrigerator messages “Go down 19” and “Go down 92” are ambiguous instructions that appear in two homes and invite Mike Noonan to read a supernatural communication as a crossword clue. Their numbers seem to offer direction, but neither message yields a confirmed destination or explanation; their significance lies in the way they connect domestic objects, Mike’s puzzle-solving habits, and the novel’s uncertain traffic between the living and the unseen.

Appearance and First Interpretation

At Sara Laughs, Mike finds the first message among the fruit and vegetable magnets on the refrigerator. Its words and number are arranged in a broken, puzzle-like form, ending in the anomalous “19n.” Mike wonders whether he placed it there himself while absorbed in what he calls the zone, or whether one of his invisible roommates did. The message is therefore uncertain from the start: it may be his own forgotten action, or a communication from an unseen presence.

Mike reads the arrangement aloud as “Go down 19n” and considers two possibilities. It could indicate a compass heading, or it could mean to go to a crossword’s nineteenth Down clue. The second reading fits his familiarity with crosswords, but does not identify which puzzle to consult. He checks his current puzzle book, whose clues include comic wordplay, and then scans several different nineteenth-down answers. None connects to his circumstances in a way he can recognize. The search establishes the message as a riddle without supplying a solution.

Recurrence at Mattie’s Home

A related message appears on the refrigerator at Mattie Devore’s home. Kyra Devore has noticed it and asks Mattie to show Mike the “crosspatch.” Mattie explains that the message was on the refrigerator that morning and that she copied it onto a folded sheet of paper because Kyra thought Mike, who did crossword puzzles, would know what it meant. The note preserves the same broken arrangement, but its final element reads “ninety2.”

The second appearance strengthens the sense that the messages are not simply the result of Mike’s absent-minded puzzle-making. The first was found at Sara Laughs; the second was present in Mattie’s home before she copied it down. Yet the difference in their endings—“19n” and “ninety2”—keeps the pair from resolving into a straightforward repeated instruction. Mike recognizes the second as another simple crossword-like puzzle but admits that he does not know what it means, and asks to keep the paper.

Roads, Numbers, and Unresolved Direction

After spending time with Mattie and Kyra, Mike reflects on the messages as “go down nineteen” at Sara Laughs on Lane Forty-two and “go down ninety-two” at Mattie’s home on Wasp Hill Road. He wonders whether they indicate different vectors from the land to the lake or separate points on The Street, but arrives at no answer. This later comparison gives the numbers a possible geographical dimension: they may be crossword references, directions, or coordinates linking places around the lake.

The messages thus sustain several readings without confirming any. Their crossword form draws Mike toward a familiar system of clues and answers, while their recurrence in separate houses makes a private mistake increasingly difficult to assume. The numbers may map movement through the landscape, but no destination is demonstrated. As a result, the messages function less as solved directions than as evidence that the ordinary refrigerator can become a surface for communication whose source and purpose remain uncertain.
